Your relationship with money: where does it come from?

·5 min read

Have you ever wondered why you do certain things with money, even when you know they are not the best decisions? The answer often lies in the past.

Money scripts — the stories from childhood

Each of us carries "money scripts" — beliefs about money formed in childhood. Common examples:

  • "Money doesn't grow on trees"
  • "Rich people are selfish"
  • "We never have enough money"
  • "Don't talk about money, it's rude"
  • How these stories affect us

If you grew up hearing that "money is the root of all evil", you may subconsciously sabotage your financial success. Or if you witnessed fights about money, you might avoid financial conversations altogether.

    Exercise: Discover your story

    Answer honestly:

  • What is your first memory involving money?
  • What did your parents say about money?
  • What emotions do you feel when you open your bank account?
  • How to rewrite the story

You can't change the past, but you can choose new beliefs:

  • "Money is a neutral tool"
  • "I deserve to have money and manage it well"
  • "I can talk about money without shame"
  • Awareness is the first step. Transformation comes with practice.
